From August 28, 2023, to September 1, 2023, the conference of the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) took place in Cappadocia, Turkey. Under the conference theme "Connecting Science Education with Cultural Heritage," contributions to science education research were presented in a hybrid format, with IDN contributing two presentations.
In the first presentation, Malte Michelsen shared insights from his doctoral research on the topic of conceptual change through digital peer interaction. A cognitive-linguistic analysis of the expressions made during this process highlighted the significant role of social aspects in learning processes. The results emphasize the Peer-Interaction Method as an instructional approach in which subject heterogeneity serves as a prerequisite for successful learning processes. To facilitate transfer into classroom practice, a digital plugin for Moodle learning platforms was developed. This plugin not only assists educators in implementation but also enables the collection of research-relevant data.
In the second contribution, Dr. Alexander Büssing presented new findings from an interview study with educators about the nature of science education research (titled: "A Family Resemblance Approach to Science Education Research"). This approach applies the categories of the Nature of Science to the reflection on science education research itself. The presentation was part of the online symposium "S|E|H Issues as Origin for Transfer in Research and Practice," where opportunities for improving the transfer between research and practical fields were discussed. The presentation, also available on YouTube, advocated for the need to better understand teachers' perspectives through the lens of the Nature of Science to enhance the transfer to practice.
The next ESERA conference will take place in 2025 in Copenhagen. We are already looking forward to the new approaches to science education that will be presented there.
